Chicago Tours

Each year, the annual Chicago Summer Tour Series shines a light upon a collection of spaces that represent the pluralist nature of the city of Chicago. During 2009, our inaugural year – Beautiful Spaces, Sacred Places – invited participants into the inner sanctum of some of the city’s most compelling spaces. This series focused on sites near Downtown Chicago, with a different faith tradition represented each week of the twelve tours. From the quiet simplicity of the Midwest Buddhist Temple to the Gothic Revival grandeur of Fourth Presbyterian Church to the unassuming oasis of the Downtown Islamic Center, this tour offered visitors a better understanding of both the architectural significance and the faith traditions of these diverse spaces, re-connecting the original and the current use to the design and materiality of the space.

National and International Tours

Sacred Space International also leads participants to sacred sites across the country from the mosques and synagogues of New York City to the missions of the California coast. We welcome a great diversity of tour participants, from academics to interested amateur historians, inviting you to become modern day pilgrims on a voyage of discovery to view and experience our world’s sacred spaces. We focus on those sites where religious architecture and interfaith dialogue have become intertwined through both peaceful and tumultuous events of our shared history. From the megalithic monuments and early monastic hermitage sites of Ireland to the Hindi, Buddhist and Zoroastrian Fire Temples of India to the Mosques, Orthodox Cathedrals and Churches of Bosnia; these tours provide intimate access to ancient sites and modern structures.
